Alternatives to Invisalign

Alternatives to Invisalign

Every patient has a different budget, case, and set of goals when it comes to orthodontic treatment. While Invisalign® remains a popular choice for patients who are interested in a discreet solution, it is not the best choice for everyone. Some patients are seeking more cost-effective treatments, some want a shorter treatment timeline, and others simply do not qualify for Invisalign. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to Invisalign on the market, and your dentist can help you select a treatment that closely aligns with your needs and expectations.

Reasons to Look for an Alternative

There are several reasons why Invisalign may not be the best treatment option for you.

Your Case is Too Complex

Although Invisalign can treat mild to complex cases of misalignment, there are certain jaw-related issues that cannot be effectively addressed with treatment. If you have severe bite issues, traditional braces may be a better choice. Traditional metal braces are made of strong stainless steel. They can reposition your upper or lower jaw as well as shift your teeth into their ideal position. Should you desire a more discreet orthodontic solution, you can also ask your dentist about:

  • Clear Brackets: These braces are made using pure monocrystalline sapphire and are virtually transparent.  The archwire may be clear or metal.
  • Ceramic Brackets: Many dentists offer ceramic brackets, which are stain-resistant and tooth-colored to blend with your smile.
  • Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are placed on the back of your teeth and are not visible when you smile.
  • Damon™ Smile: This brand eliminates the need for rubber bands, which can draw attention to your smile as well as collect plaque and bacteria.

Although these options can increase the cost of treatment, they are good alternatives for patients who are concerned about the aesthetics of metal braces.

Ceramic brackets are designed to blend the with shade of your smile.

Invisalign is Too Expensive

Although Invisalign typically costs as much as traditional braces, you may be looking for a more inexpensive brand of clear aligners. Though not guaranteed to cost less, brands such as ClearCorrect® and MTM® ClearAligner can help you achieve the same results with less out-of-pocket expenses. New companies such as SmileDirectClub also offer a less costly way to straighten your teeth, but treatment is usually completed at home and may not produce the same results.

You Need Faster Results

For most adults, Invisalign can help you achieve desired results in as little as 12 months. While this timeline is typically shorter than that of traditional braces, it may not be fast enough if you have an important upcoming event. Many dentists offer Invisalign Express, a five-stage treatment for patients with minor orthodontic issues. FastBraces® are yet another expedited treatment and can help you achieve a straighter smile in 120 days.

You Are Simply Concerned with Cosmetic Issues

Some patients are more concerned about the look of their smile, rather than the restorative quality of orthodontia. Patients who want to correct cosmetic imperfections have several options. Six Month Smiles® is a short-term treatment that quickly and effectively straightens the teeth that are visible when you smile. This option features tooth-colored wires and clear brackets.

You may also wish to consider porcelain veneers, which act as "instant orthodontics." These thin porcelain shells are bonded to the front surface of your teeth and conceal various blemishes beneath. Veneers may be right for you if you have a small gap in your smile or minor misalignment.

Learn about Your Options

A straighter smile can improve your oral health and increase your self-confidence. If you have been told that you are not a good candidate for Invisalign, you have other options. Speak with your dentist to find out how you can achieve a straighter, more balanced smile.
